For me, to listen to the Word of the Lord is to listen to voices that have not been trained or taught. It is to listen to the wind howling, leaves rustling, rain, the cry of hawks, the song of sparrows, the whine of bumble bees, the gurgle of creeks, the chorus of clicking cicadas.
To listen to the Word of the Lord is to listen intently to the low rumble of a German Shepherd at the window or a cat in the sun.
To listen to the Word of the Lord is to listen to the universal human sounds – the coughs, the sighs, the laughter; it is to listen to the sound of my breath hissing in the dark and mysterious caves of my nose.
When I listen to these sounds with an attitude of curiosity and reverence, I find in them a similarity, a deep familiarity, a wild holiness. All these sounds come from the same place, a place that is no place. They come from heaven.
